Tanzania's classic northern circuit at a comfortable pace: elephant-rich Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater's Big Five floor, and the Serengeti's plains, over five unhurried days with a flight home instead of a long, tiring final drive back to Arusha.
This is the itinerary most first-time Tanzania travellers picture when they imagine a safari, and five days is enough to do it properly rather than in a rush. It links three distinct ecosystems, each included for a specific reason, on drive times that are honest about how long Tanzania's roads actually take.
Day one covers the roughly 2 hour drive from Arusha to Tarangire, known for elephant herds that can number in the hundreds and a landscape of ancient baobabs unlike anywhere else on the circuit. After a morning game drive on day two, you'll drive around 3.5 hours via Karatu to the Ngorongoro Highlands, arriving in time to watch the light drop into the crater from the rim. Day three begins with a descent onto the crater floor itself for three to four hours among lion, elephant, buffalo, flamingo and the conservation area's resident black rhino, before continuing roughly three hours to central Serengeti for an afternoon game drive.
Day four is a full day in the Serengeti around Seronera, home to a strong resident leopard population and, depending on your travel month, migration herds moving through the area. Rather than repeat the long overland journey back, day five ends with a scheduled flight from Seronera Airstrip to Arusha, around 60 to 90 minutes, after one final morning game drive.
Each park earns its place: Tarangire for elephant density and baobab scenery you won't find elsewhere, Ngorongoro for a virtually guaranteed Big Five experience in one contained bowl, and the Serengeti for scale and, seasonally, the migration itself. Wildlife viewing is strong year-round, though June through October brings the driest roads and the most concentrated game around Tarangire's remaining water.
Families with children from around age 6, and honeymooning couples wanting variety without an exhausting schedule, are equally well suited here.
